Writing purposeful AI prompts

through contemporary examples including techniques

used by Prompt AI Engineers

(adaptable to different grades)

With a written AI prompt, a user directs an AI chatbot such as Chat GPT to generate useful responses. To receive useful responses, any user has to design these prompts in a way that an AI chatbot clearly understands what's asked of it, so that it can respond with the best possible output.

When we worked as AI Prompt Engineers, we learned that interactions with AI and the results from these interactions went hand in hand with how we worded and structured prompts. It is like talking to a robot. MIT STS Teaching & Learning Technology worded it nicely:

“You can think of a generative AI tool like ChatGPT as "a machine you are programming with words." (Mollick, 2023). "Your AI interactions and the output quality hinge largely on how you word your prompts."

As AI becomes increasingly integrated into students' lives, they must acquire the skills to interact with and effectively utilize chatbots. We will constantly adapt classes to AI's growth so students can compete with and manage AI.

While we taught students, we noticed they write their prompts as if using a normal search engine. As a result, their prompts were too short and vague and led to unsatisfactory results. Or student's impatience caused by excitement or getting information as fast as possible ended in hasty and improper prompts.

In this exciting class, AI class students will learn how to write purposeful AI prompts and will experience the benefits of writing great AI prompts. In each class, we will introduce students to good and bad prompt examples regarding different curricular subjects such as math, science, English, art, etc. They will analyze these prompts regarding specificity, detail, structure, and typographical errors.
